Death and architecture. -Allison Killing-

The most common causes of death are cancer and heart attacks, because they are chronic diseases. We spend so much time in the hospital. We've all been in a hospital, and we all know that we suffer discomfort and hallways are unpleasant. Hospital architecture doesn't do a good job designing hospitals because death is a tabu in the society.
In Italy there's an hospital that seems cozy because there are some backyards where you can feel natural lights and natural air.

Allison Killing, an architect, complains about hospital architecture and asks people to talk about it to change the hospital design, or rather, how we die.

(Maria de la Heras)

Since Johannes Kepler used Mars to explain the organization of the cosmos back in the 17th century, people have been royally obsessed with the Red Planet... Why everyone keeps talking about Mars. Weir’s film is certainly one reason Mars is front and center in the zeitgeist.“I’ve been a lifelong fan of space and space travel. So I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in Mars. It’s endlessly fascinating,” he says. “For instance: The largest mountain in the solar system is Olympus Mons on Mars. It’s three times the height of Mount Everest. But it is also very wide. The base is about the size of Arizona. This means the actual grade, the steepness of the land, is so subtle that the curvature of Mars has a larger effect than the grade of the terrain. So if you were on Olympus Mons and looked all around you, you would think you were standing on a perfectly flat plain.”

What to make of the recent announcement about water on Mars. “NASA’s announcement means there’s a tangible place to look for evidence of life on Mars,” says Weir. “It’s pretty exciting.” Nonetheless, as Petranek points out, there’s no reason to get too giddy; the news is confirmation of previous suggestions that Mars has seasonal water flows. “Careful observers of research from Mars orbiters were not in the least surprised by the announcement from NASA, he says. “Furthermore, we know there is lots of water ice at the poles, lots of water bound up in the Martian soil as ice, and that there are entire glaciers of ice covered by a thin layer of dust.” What’s perhaps been missed in the excitement at any water on Mars is that actually, there might be a whole load of it there. “Jim Green, director of planetary science at NASA, told me last month over coffee that ‘Mars is loaded with water. There is an incredible amount of water on the planet,’” says Petranek.

Success is a continuous journey, by Richard John (Alex Pigrau)

Summary
Richard John starts explaining how the people think that is the success and asking why after reached success, then they fail. He says that the people who reach success they fail because then they relax. Richard has this point of view because he lived that experience.

He says that when he thought that he was success he could buy what he want, but he was depressed because the way that he got it he didn’t like it.
This experience has helped him to know what is really to get success. Basically what he says about how you have to get success is ignoring the money and focusing in your project.
For the conclusion he explains how now believe that is success: “Success is a continuous journey of persist, work, focus, push, ideas, improve, serve and persist”

Conclusion

I chose this ted talks because I agree of all that he says in the exposition. And I found it because in the psychology section it was the one who had the most interesting title and because it was one of the most visited of this section.

"I'm going to die?" The honest answer (Vicky Zabaco)

In this video, it's about a doctor, specialized in critical care from Suffolk Country, New York, and is a person who has helped a lot of people since has started, seven years ago. When a patient only has few minutes to live and there was nothing that he could do for them, and the patient, asks "I'm going to die?", the doctor only have two options. The first, say the truth, or the second, say that they won't to die, (lie them). He in the past always lied because he was afraid, because the patients will die in fear, just grasping for those last moments of life. But in one accident, when the patient asks "I'm going to die?", he decides to say him the truth. The doctor saw in his eyes peace and acceptance. The doctor, discover that there are three patterns that he has observed in all of these cases (that he says the truth). The first pattern, was apologize, a need for forgiveness, because the guilt, is universal, it not depends of the religion or culture. The second pattern, it was remembrance, because the people need to be remembered, and need to feel that they would be living on. And finally, the third pattern, the dying need to know that their life had meaning, they need to know that their whole life, has meaning, and it isn't wasted.

Finally, the doctor saw that the littlest things, the littlest moments, this things, give you peace in the last breath of your life.

Frans Lanting: Photos that give voice to the animal kingdom (Estephany)

Some years ago, it was his good fortune to meet a tribal elder on an island not far from Vancouver. His name is Jimmy Smith, and he shared a story with Frans Lanting that is told among his people, who call themselves the Kwikwasut'inuxw.

Once upon a time, he told to Frans, all animals on Earth were one. Even though they look different on the outside, inside, they're all the same, and from time to time they would gather at a sacred cave deep inside the forest to celebrate their unity. When they arrived, they would all take off their skins. Raven shed his feathers, bear his fur, and salmon her scales, and then, they would dance. But one day, a human made it to the cave and laughed at what he saw because he did not understand. Embarrassed, the animals fled, and that was the last time they revealed themselves this way.
The ancient understanding that underneath their separate identities, all animals are one, has been a powerful inspiration for him. He likes to get past the fur, the feathers and the scales. He want to get under the skin. No matter whether if he is facing a giant elephant or a tiny tree frog, his goal is to connect us with them, eye to eye.   As a photographer, he tries to reach beyond the differences in our genetic makeup to appreciate all we have in common with every other living thing. When he use his camera, he dropped his skin like the animals at that cave so he can show who they really are.

"As animals blessed with the power of rational thought, we can marvel at the intricacies of life. As citizens of a planet in trouble, it is our moral responsibility to deal with the dramatic loss in diversity of life. But as humans with hearts, we can all rejoice in the unity of life, and perhaps we can change what once happened in that sacred cave. "

How to control someone else's arm with your brain by Greg Gage (Estephany)

Greg Gage said that:

"The brain is an amazing and complex organ. And while many people are fascinated by the brain, they can't really tell you that much about the properties about how the brain works because we don't teach neuroscience in schools."

"And that's a shame because one out of five of us, that's 20 percent of the entire world, will have a neurological disorder. And there are zero cures for these diseases. And so it seems that what we should be doing is reaching back earlier in the eduction process and teaching students about neuroscience so that in the future, they may be thinking about possibly becoming a brain scientist."

When he was a graduate studient , with his lab mate Tim Marzullo were thinking to took this complex equipment that they have for studying the brain and made it simple enough and affordable enough that anyone that you know, an amateur or a high school student, could learn and actually participate in the discovery of neuroscience.

A few years ago, they started a company called Backyard Brains and we make kit neuroscience equipment.

He needed a volunteer and showed: extending the arm for science, and putting electrodes.

Talk nerdy to me (Elisa Ramos)

Melissa Marshall brings a message to all scientists. She says that the non-scientists are fascinated by what scientists are doing. So, she says that they have tell us about the things that they do in a way that we can understand.
The non-scientists are interested in things that they do, but if cientists don’t explain us in a way that we can understand then we get bored and we don’t pay attention.
Melissa tell us some tricks to do a better presentation, for example, if they do a presentation without photos, not only bores us but also overwhelms us. She says that a good presentation I with some pictures and words easy to understand.

If we have hoped that there was some ability that you hadn't discovered yet, and you were just naturally great at. And some questions that are true, and funny, not sillly, for example, If we have broken something in real life and found yourself looking for an "undo" botton.
