Why should schools start later for teens - Wendy Troxel
Wendy is a sleep researcher and a mother of a teenager. She says that she doesn’t feel well waking his son up at 6 in the morning, because he must be awaken up by his biological clock. She says most teenagers living in America don’t get the hours of sleep they need, due to school. A teenager must get atleast 8 hours of sleep, and she compares it with the grades, she says that 8 hours of sleep is like a C on an exam, and waking them up at 6 am is like waking an adult at 4 am. She says the loss of sleep doesn’t just have an effect on their grades, but it can also cause depression, because their brains are still developing and since adolescence is the phase of emotional devolepment. She also says that even just an extra hour of sleep can help, and it shows in their results and behaviour.
Nilofer Merchant says that being seated most of our days has health inconvenients. She refers to the fact that we need to do activities and to exercise more. She says that one day that she had a meeting with a girl, she told her that she was going to take a walk with her dogs so she decided to join her. Since that day, Nilofer decided that every time she had a meeting she would go for a walk.
A boy of only 11 years old, plays the piano as if he were an adult, Joey started playing this instrument since since he was a child he has been listening to his father's old records, Joey Alexander plays a modern and sharp jazz style that probably is not I would expect to hear from a child. In this TED talk, Alexander makes a very special presentation of a classic Thelonious Monk.
To be a child, it's quite impressive how you can play the piano that way, so we came to the conclusion that if you start something earlier, it will be given before.
Ideas worth dating. Rainn Wilson gives us a description of who he is, what he likes, how old he is... He tells us about TED TALK and tells us to choose the best idea for each one. He teaches us in the first person, who puts into practice each of these ideas. It tells us that we must explore new ideas.
In my conclusion is as well says that being alone has a price and to take advantage of time and move forward you have to choose the best idea for each one and put it into practice.
Commercial products are very important for society, and so, you ask yourself: how do you know if the manufactured product would please the consumer? "Empathy for what your customers want is probably the main indicator of business success," says designer Tom Hulme. In this brief talk, Hulme presents three interesting examples related to design and user experience, where people have developed their own paths of desire out of necessity. Once you know more necesities and tastes of each one, from there you can know if the product is going to like the consumer or not.
What Hulme explains in the TED talk, is what is called "market research", since before a product goes on sale, a series of analyzes is made to find out if the producer will succeed or not.
Lisa explain her story by reading books, she had a dream that she couldn’t achieved special because of her parents that that didn’t let her achieve it, but the she decided to pour all of her anger by reading books who helped her learn things she couldn’t have learned but that age, by the time she moved in the EEUU, she also read books, reading the Bible she wanted to re-start her relationship with her parents. By that time she also realized how perspectives work by looking things from different angles, thats how she decided to read books at the same time not only to compare them but also somehow she was able to connect with people of the past and the present. She finally explains what are dreams are for her, she explains that coming true is not just the only purpose of dreams, but to get us in touch with where dreams come from.
The Ted Talk I saw, was about an Arab woman who is a photographer. She has met a lot of girls that couldn't learn to read and write because of their father, husband... And after travelling to Countries as Egypt or Tunisia, she decided to talk about those women that fought against this reality and went to an academy to learn those basic knowledges. For example, she talks about a woman that could read after attending to the classes, and her husband threatened her because she was able to read his phone messages. -CARLOTA MARTIN ARDERIUS
Link: https://www.ted.com/talks/maysoon_zayid_i_got_99_problems_palsy_is_just_one The ted talk i have seen is called "I got 99 problems and palsy is just one" Maysoon Zayid asuffers from Cerebral Palsy, , her body shakes all the time and she can't control it.
She says her parents never treated her like she was disabled, her parents made her do every errand that her sisters were supposed to do. Like mopping the floor, going to school... Doctor's said she would never walk, but her father taught her at the age of 5 by standing on his feet. She's always dreamt of being an actress, but she never got any part at the school's play. There was one time that she thought she would get one, because the main character of the play suffered CP, but she never got it, because they told her that they were worried that she couldn't do the stunts. She explains her life in such a funny way, and she doesn't see her disorder as a reason to stop persuing her dreams. I really liked this ted talk because it explains in a differents way how to deal with such a big problem every day
