Clint Smith starts his Ted Talk with a powerful quote by Martin Luter
King “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the
silence of our friends.”
What he tries to explain with this quote is that
things that we don’t say matter even more than the things we say.
Moreover, he says that we all have had those moments when we hear or see
something that we know is not right but instead of speaking up and let the
others know our opinion, we just remain silent, because we are afraid of what
other people are going to think or say about us. He highlights that this is a
very selfish act because we are thinking about ourselves or our own benefit
instead of thinking what the other person is feeling.
He concludes that we shouldn’t do that and reminds us that our voice is
powerful and we should use it to change the world for the better or at least,
try it.
